At that time, there was a system that allowed people to be exempted from compulsory education, so I myself did not attend either elementary school or junior high school. That\u2019s why I think I probably still can\u2019t do even the basic arithmetic that lower-grade elementary students learn.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I turned<\/strong> fifteen \u2014 normally the age when a student finishes compulsory education after the third year of junior high school \u2014 it was decided that I should receive home-visit education.A teacher who taught at the school within the Japanese Red Cross Hospital in Yamaguchi City would come to my home during his free time once a week and give me one-on-one lessons. I skipped elementary school altogether and began receiving junior-high-level home-visit education from the age of fifteen.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Damals gab es die M\u00f6glichkeit, von der Schulpflicht befreit zu werden, und deshalb habe ich selbst weder die Grundschule noch die Mittelschule besucht. Daher denke ich, dass ich wahrscheinlich bis heute nicht einmal die einfache Mathematik beherrsche, die Kinder in den ersten Grundschuljahren lernen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Als ich 15 Jahre alt wurde \u2013 also in dem Alter, in dem man normalerweise die neunte Klasse abschlie\u00dft und die Schulpflicht endet \u2013 wurde beschlossen, dass ich Hausunterricht bekommen sollte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ein Lehrer, der an der Schulklasse im Rotkreuz-Krankenhaus in der Stadt Yamaguchi unterrichtete, kam einmal pro Woche in seiner freien Zeit zu mir nach Hause, um mir im Einzelunterricht nur das beizubringen, was m\u00f6glich war. So begann ich mit 15 Jahren, ohne je die Grundschule besucht zu haben, den Hausunterricht auf Mittelschulniveau zu erhalten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the beginning, I had been told that I didn\u2019t have any parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then suddenly, I was told, \u201cActually, you do have parents,\u201d and of course, I couldn\u2019t just say, \u201cOh, I see,\u201d as if it were nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think it was the same for Masaya-kun as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That said, I never hated my parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But because I always felt, \u201cI\u2019m all alone \u2014 I\u2019ve always been alone,\u201d maybe that\u2019s why I became a strong-willed person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ich denke, bei Masaya-kun war es genauso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Das hei\u00dft aber nicht, dass ich meine Eltern gehasst habe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aber weil ich immer das Gef\u00fchl hatte: \u201eIch bin ganz allein \u2013 ich war schon immer allein\u201c, bin ich vielleicht ein willensstarker Mensch geworden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t have a clear memory of it myself, but I realized that I didn\u2019t have ears when I was about five years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to my mother, I used to grab her ears and make gestures as if to say that I wanted ears of my own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because I had no ears, my mother made handmade ear covers for me, tying them on with strings so that other people couldn\u2019t see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The road in front of our house was a route children used to walk to school, and I remember how painful it was when they laughed at me or made fun of me, shouting, \u201cWhat\u2019s that?\u201d as they passed by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laut meiner Mutter griff ich oft nach ihren Ohren und machte Gesten, als wollte ich sagen, dass ich auch eigene Ohren haben m\u00f6chte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Da ich keine Ohren hatte, n\u00e4hte meine Mutter mir handgemachte Ohrabdeckungen, die sie mit Schn\u00fcren festband, damit andere sie nicht sehen konnten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die Stra\u00dfe vor unserem Haus war ein Schulweg, und ich erinnere mich, wie schmerzhaft es war, wenn die Schulkinder an mir vorbeigingen, \u00fcber mich lachten oder riefen: \u201eWas ist das denn?\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I\u2019ve gone through kinds of suffering that, if I had lived an ordinary life, I probably never would have experienced. That\u2019s just the reality. I still think it\u2019s totally unjust. And the people who caused all this\u2014 they\u2019re living comfortably on the other side, acting like nothing happened. That really makes me think, \u201cWhat the hell is that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Masaya: Letztendlich ist es so, dass durch das Thalidomid mein Leben v\u00f6llig auseinandergebrochen ist \u2013 zum Beispiel meine Familie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ich musste ein Leid erfahren, das ich wahrscheinlich nie erlebt h\u00e4tte, wenn ich ein \u201enormales\u201c Leben h\u00e4tte f\u00fchren k\u00f6nnen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Das empfinde ich als zutiefst ungerecht.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Und die, die das angerichtet haben, leben auf der anderen Seite ganz ruhig weiter \u2013 so, als ginge sie das alles nichts an.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Das macht mich wirklich w\u00fctend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
